There's just something about Kelis, might be her craziness, might be her creativity or simply her talent at what she does but she always seems to break open into a new kind of music style.

Especially in the past few years, I've noticed that music has been headed on an interesting yet rather monotonic almost inconceivable path. It seems like music especially, urban music, has been lacking the steady floods of incredibly talented people making it onto mainstream media, rather that they are to be found on personal blogs, alternative music sites, etc. It's almost a shame that these artists do not get to compete on the open playing field anymore, like Tupac, Foxy Brown, Nas, Notorious B.I.G., Big L, Jay-Z,..(I could obviously go on an don/which is exactly my point but more to that later). These competitions used to create a certain ambiance or should I say a certain movement grew out of that, people following, rapping, representing, feeling represented through the music made.


Fast forward to today and here we are scanning through the net, literally munching through blogs, twitter profiles, facebook groups/pages, YouTube channels and the like to find anything usual that gives us the kicks from back in the days. Whilst here and there great artists like Kanye West, and more recent Kendrick Lamar and Taylor the Creator create game changing music, it is still not the same overflow of the 90's that we had gotten so used to. thus we receive their music as if we were hungry little children that have been waiting for the past 3 weeks in scorching hot summer for the ice-cream man.


This makes me wonder why. Why is good music becoming rarer and rarer? Why is it that great artists like Lauryn Hill stop releasing albums? Is it truly the "industry"? If so, why isn't there such a thing like an artists union protecting basic rights of creating artists?


It are times like these, while listening to Kelis's new songs that make me remember tunes heard recent enough to recall artists such as SZA, Lianna La Havas, LOLAWOLF that (in my own, very personal and amateur opinion) seem to have been creating very similar tunes prior to Kelis's release of her new album. My point is that the music of many artists that are incredibly great and remarkably talented as well as creative, receive less recognition than bigger and famous artists, simply due to fame.


Kelis in particular is (as she has always done before) making quite alternative, kind of rocky as well as futuristic music with which she has been taking folks by storm. Music by her, sounding similar to other less known artists, seems to be more recognized and celebrated than the latter. And although my mind completely understands the reasons for this (she worked her way through the industry, met the right people at the right time, etc.), my heart is dying to see others like denitia&sene and Mapei killing the charts themselves.


Nonetheless, I love them all!
